Internship Overview:
The PIRGIM Internship Program
bridges classroom studies with real world experience by offering students hands-on
experience in the fight to protect our environment, consumers and democracy.
PIRGIM has internships available to motivated students seeking a challenge outside
of the traditional classroom setting. Students may earn college credit while
building skills and their resume, and working on important issues.
Interns must be highly motivated,
have excellent communication skills and have a strong desire to make a difference
on important public interest issues. A commitment of 10 hours per week is required.

PIRGIM Internship Descriptions
Each internship varies based
on the present need of the organization and the interests and skill of the intern.
Here are a few of the intern positions we are currently interviewing for:
Legislative Research
Internship
Goals:
· Gather the information needed to persuade state legislators
pass strong public interest legislation, strengthen PIRGIM's reputation among
legislators
· Learn how the state legislative system works, how to influence
the making of legislation and how a non-profit organization works
Potential Activities:
· Track bills - find out what bills have been introduced on our
issues, write bill summaries for our lobbyists, track when these bills are discussed
and voted on
· Update our target chart - gather and record key information
about legislators and their districts for use in legislative targeting work
· Prepare our legislative scorecard to hold legislators accountable
for their votes - record the voting record of state legislators on important
public interest issues, summarizing legislation, create a brochure and website
explaining votes, assist in release of scorecard to the media
Grassroots Organizing
Internship
Goals:
· Defend important environmental laws by organizing demonstrations
of broad public support for environmental policies and increasing involvement
of concerned citizens and students in our work
· Strengthen leadership and organizing skills, learn how non-profit
organizations and grassroots advocacy campaigns work
Potential Activities:
· Activist phone-banking - call PIRGIM members, let them know
about important upcoming public interest decisions and urge them to call their
elected officials, write letters to the editor and
· Build activist network - identify and work with activists willing
to help spread the word when calls to legislators are needed
· Organize volunteers - recruit, train and organize volunteers
to assist in activist phone banking and postcard gathering efforts
· Organize a citizen lobby day - assist in planning and coordinating
a citizen lobby day - including recruiting students and citizen-activists, scheduling
lobby meetings with legislators in Lansing
